Gymnastics Gold Driving TV Viewing

From August 12th to 14th China won at least 1 gymnastics gold medal each day which helped to drive viewing on these days. Several other key matches featured high viewing levels as well.

While day time viewing is lower than primetime viewing, the men’s team gymnastics final was viewed in part by at least 150 million viewers on August 12th placing it in the top 5 events for the day. The women’s team gymnastics also reached a lot of viewings. It was the second ranked program for August 13th.

CCTV Olympic channel broadcast the men’s individual all around finals from 11:00-13:40 on August 14th and Yang Wei won the gold medal. This broadcast reached 147 million viewers. The event generated the highest viewing for the CCTV Olympic channel on August 15th, with a 5.3% rating, which was higher than for some events that took place in the evening. .

5 matches listed here also drew a lot of TV viewers; the women's 200m butterfly, the championship of the women's 50m rifle, women’s archery and China men’s basketball team versus Angola. All told these 5 events reached 265 million vieers during the day.

While strong performances by the Chinese delegation drove strong day time viewing the highest viewing levels were still recorded during prime time. Chinese Men’s Table Tennis beat Austria to take the top rated position for August 14th.
